APPROACH DESCRIPTION
ANALYSIS AND CREATION OF VISUAL CULTURE TO CHANGE STEREOTYPES
The proposal developed in this educational resource is directly related to the approach Analysis and creation of visual culture to change stereotypes. The main idea of the approach is to use education, specifically Art Education, as an instrument of social change, promoting diversity by questioning the environment. The proposal is based on the elimination of stereotypes, negative attitudes or erroneous concepts about the different cultural groups, specifically about gender. To that end, we distinguish four phases:

-
OBSERVATION Elements of visual culture are used to examine the social problems, inequalities, or stereotypes that exist in society. To achive this goal, teachers provide their students with images (advertisements, video clips, magazines, etc.) in which these social problems are shown.
-
ANALYSIS A secure environment for dialogue is created, through respect and freedom of expression, that does not punish the difference, but rather accepts and criticises the inequalities that exist in society and the regulatory system. In addition to questioning the elements of visual culture that are being worked on, it is recommended to discuss the inequalities that appear in their closest environment.
-
CHANGE The production of visual culture is proposed as a form of social and multicultural reconstruction. The students break the roles and stereotypes by creating photographs, drawings, videos, etc., as the expression of differences and the criticism of inequality. Therefore, it is possible to promote change along with values based on respect.
-
SHARE The aim of this project is to spread the works of the students beyond the classroom. Ideally, these productions should be visible and shared both in the school environment and beyond the walls of the school. Social networks are key to reach this goal, since they are means through which the artwork can be shared and possibly impact society.
